Hello, I thought I would compile a list of helpful (Southeast Asia-specific) travel tips that YOU can use when you decide to take that first step.
#1 and the title of this article
Don't drink tap water. You might have a water filter and an iron stomach (lol, metal pun) but trust me, being sick can ruin the trip. Some filters filter lead but not chlorine, microplastics but not manganese, and TYPE A of the intestinal parasites but not TYPE B. Save yourself the possible Dr. trip after unknowingly downing leaded water and cough up a buck for a sealed bottle. I recommend the 7-11 Select brand for the distinguished water consumer.
#2 Bring a water filter
But you just said no one filter can deal with everything! Ok, hear me out. You ran out of water and are walking for miles in 90°F heat on the side of a Mexican interstate: Would you rather have A) a water filter OR B) you should really have a water filter.
#3 The holy trinity
Just like for cooking, there is, in fact, a holy trinity for travel. They are as follows: Booking.com, Kiwi, and Skiplagged. Wow, and just like that, you saved $400 on a flight. Congrats.
#4 Take risks...with travel insurance!
Not only is travel insurance great for unexpected accidents or injuries, but it is also a blast when your flight gets canceled, leaving you stranded in Guatemala...or other places I don't know never happened to me. You can have peace of mind knowing that your emergency room visit, flight cancellation, or hotel cancellation is covered.
#5 Eat everything but bring ICE
Trying street food and local fare is the fastest and most delicious way to get your gut acclimated to new environments. Food is also a great way to connect with the people and culture of the place you're visiting, so you shouldn't let yourself be held back. While rare, especially when subscribed to winterbtravel on YouTube, you might stumble upon an undercooked chicken shwarma. Don't panic! The next 24 hours are going to suck, but I have a tried-and-true fix. Immodium(if severe), crying, and electrolytes otherwise known as ICE! Take the day off, get it out of your system, and rise to get another shawarma because it was so tasty (please don't).
That's all for now, I'm going to go get a mango smoothie and some pad Thai.
